FC Bayern Munich has officially confirmed the signing of Luis Diaz. The 28-year-old winger joins from Liverpool FC and has signed a contract at Säbener Straße until 2029.
Following the departures of Leroy Sané (Galatasaray) and Thomas Müller, as well as the serious injury to Jamal Musiala, FC Bayern signed an immediate reinforcement for its offense on Wednesday. As previously reported, Luis Diaz is moving from Liverpool FC to Munich, where the Colombian international will sign a four-year contract and wear the number 14 jersey.
“Luis Diaz is an internationally experienced player with enormous quality, great skills and great reliability,” praised sporting director Max Eberl: “He will help our team immediately. We are delighted that we were able to sign him for FC Bayern. Transfers like this work when everything fits together. Our fans can look forward to an exceptional player.”
CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen speaks of “one of the best left-wingers in the Premier League” and a “real personality.” There was also praise for the third party in this deal: “We would like to thank Liverpool for their fair and professional negotiations at all times.”
Sporting director Christoph Freund sees Luis Diaz as a player who is “a goalscorer” and “at the same time works incredibly hard for his team”: “Luis Diaz represents a complete package that our fans will love.”
Only Kane and Hernandez were more expensive
Bayern will pay €67.5 million to Liverpool FC, with bonuses on top of the base transfer fee, two to three million euros of which should be easy to achieve. Champions League veteran Luis Diaz is now the third most expensive transfer in Bayern’s history, behind Harry Kane (just under €100 million) and Lucas Hernandez (€80 million).
Last season, when the Reds won the championship, Luis Diaz scored 13 goals in the Premier League, making him his team’s second-highest scorer behind Mohamed Salah. After Liverpool FC and previously FC Porto, Bayern Munich is now the third major club in the 28-year-old’s career, who left his native Colombia for Europe in 2019.
Will he be able to establish himself as a regular in Munich right away? “I’m very happy, it means a lot to me to be part of FC Bayern – it’s one of the biggest clubs in the world. I want to help my new team with my style of play and my personality,“ said Luis Diaz, who prefers to play on the left wing, emphasizing: ”My goal is to win every title possible – we will work hard as a team every day to achieve that.”
