Xherdan Shaqiri is writing a heavenly story after his return to FC Basel. The 33-year-old has led FCB back to success after years of biblical drought. With goals, assists, and many spectacular moves—on Saturday evening, he even scored a hat trick within nine minutes. Now he is on course for his fifth double.
“Why do you need a pope when you have Shaqiri?” asked the Neue Zürcher Zeitung a few days ago. “Habemus Xherdan” was written on a huge banner by FC Basel fans before their recent home game against Lausanne (3-2 a.e.t.), with white smoke rising from St. Jakob Park. Xherdan Shaqiri, now 33 years old, is currently outshining everyone and everything in Swiss club football. It’s a heavenly story, almost a fairy tale, after years of biblical drought for FC Basel.
