The current weather forecast for the race in Austria

The latest weather forecast for the eleventh race of the 2022 Formula 1 season in Spielberg with the forecasts for the subsequent race in France

There are very crucial questions on every race weekend of Formula 1 2022. Namely: what is the weather forecast? Can we expect a wet track on site? Will we need intermediates or even rain tyres? Or will it simply remain consistently dry from practice through qualifying to the race and dry tyres will suffice? In short: What do the drivers around Sebastian Vettel and Mick Schumacher, Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton have to be prepared for?

To be able to answer these questions, our editors keep a close eye on the weather at the Formula 1 venues a few days before the tests or race weekends begin. And as the event progresses, this preview article is constantly updated with new weather information such as temperature in degrees Celsius, wind strength, cloud cover and expected precipitation for the individual days per weekend.

The result is a weather forecast that is as accurate as possible for the respective Grands Prix of the 2022 Formula 1 season. However, all information is without guarantee, as some motorsport venues such as Spa-Francorchamps or the Nürburgring are known for having particularly changeable weather that cannot always be accurately forecast. Precipitation can also occur there unannounced.

The next time Formula One takes to the track will be at Spielberg in Austria, from 8-10 July 2022 for the eleventh race of the 2022 Formula One season.

The current forecast for the eleventh race of the season in Spielberg (8 to 10 July):

After the dramatic race at Silverstone, the next Formula 1 highlight is coming up a week later in Spielberg. Not only the next sprint race awaits us in picturesque Styria, but also a fantastic fan atmosphere.

For years, thousands of fans from all over Europe and especially many from the Netherlands have been making the pilgrimage to the Austrian Grand Prix to support Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing at their home race. This year, the organisers are even expecting a new record number of spectators. Can the crowds look forward to the sun or will the party take place under umbrellas?

On Friday, the Formula 1 drivers and fans at the track will have to be prepared for overcast skies. There won’t be much sunshine and the maximum temperature of 18 degrees Celsius won’t exactly make for a summery high. In addition, there is a slight risk of rain, at least for the morning.

Qualifying, which will take place on Friday evening this weekend, will most likely take place under drier conditions. The wind direction changes several times during the course of the day, which means that the drivers will have to adjust again and again. After all, the maximum wind speeds are just about 30 km/h.

On Saturday, the conditions improve slightly. Although the sky is still covered with heavy clouds in the morning, the sun is supposed to show itself in the afternoon. Consequently, temperatures will rise slightly to 20 degrees Celsius. All those hoping for a sprint race in wet conditions seem to be in for a disappointment.

With just a five percent chance of rain, this is extremely low. The wind is also a bit more predictable on Saturday: it comes from the north during the sprint and reaches maximum speeds of 25 km/h. For the riders, this means a crosswind in the middle of the race. For the riders, this means a crosswind in the twisty second sector and a headwind on the straight up to turn 2.

The race Sunday becomes by far the most uncomfortable day at the track. Once again, thick cloud fields form over Styria, posing a strong risk of rain.

The chance that we will experience a wet Grand Prix is currently at 45 per cent. Should it rain, it can get quite chilly at the track with an outside temperature of just 20 degrees, so a jacket is definitely recommended for everyone who wants to watch the race live.

At least the wind is picking up again. With top speeds of 45 km/h, it is supposed to blow across the track from a north-westerly direction on Sunday. So the Red Bull home race definitely doesn’t seem to be a summer festival.

At least the chance of rain is much greater than that of sunburn. But should Max Verstappen win for the fifth time at Spielberg, mild temperatures and a few patches of cloud will do nothing to dampen the party mood.

Note: This forecast will be updated several times during the week!

The first forecast for the following race in Le Castellet (24.07.2022):

Summery conditions are forecast for the Formula 1 race weekend in Spielberg. With probably around twelve hours of sunshine per day, temperatures at the Red Bull Ring will reach up to 25 degrees Celsius. The best day will probably be Sunday. There is a slight chance of rain for the entire event, but it will probably remain dry in Spielberg.
