Tennis star wins after three-year break

Caroline Wozniacki has not played a professional match in over three years. Now, the former world number one made her comeback – and successfully so.

Tennis player Caroline Wozniacki has started her comeback with an impressive victory. More than three and a half years after her last professional match at the Australian Open 2020, the Dane won her opening duel at the WTA tournament in Montreal, Canada. Wozniacki clearly beat Australian Kimberly Birrell 6-2, 6-2. The former world number one, who announced her return at the end of June, was already in very good form.

The tournament in Montreal serves as her preparation for the US Open, which will take place in New York from 28 August. She still has “goals that I want to achieve. I want to show my kids that you can achieve your dreams, regardless of age or role,” the 33-year-old mother of two had said, explaining her return to the tennis tour.

“Can I win the US Open? I think so “

In Vogue magazine, she made it clear that she was still aiming for the highest. “Can I win the US Open? I think so. Can I win the Australian Open? I think so. That’s why I’m doing this. “

Wozniacki is considered one of the biggest sports stars Denmark has ever produced. She had sealed her temporary farewell to tennis in April 2022 with a farewell show match against Angelique Kerber in Copenhagen. The Dane spent a total of 71 weeks at the top of the women’s world rankings in her career, and celebrated her only Grand Slam victory to date in Australia in 2018.
