Tennis star Nick Kyrgios cancels for Wimbledon

Last year, Nick Kyrgios reached the final of Wimbledon. This year, the Australian tennis pro will not even compete

Shortly before his opening match at the Grand Slam tournament at Wimbledon, last year’s finalist Nick Kyrgios has cancelled his start at the grass-court classic. “I did my best to be ready to take the courts at Wimbledon after my surgery,” the Australian wrote on his social networking sites. However, he said he felt pain in his wrist during his comeback and the injury turned out to be a torn ligament.

“I tried everything to be able to play and I’m disappointed to say I just didn’t have enough time to make it to Wimbledon.” He was due to meet Belgian David Goffin on Monday. It has not yet been decided who will take his place.

Organisers react via Twitter

Organisers reacted with regret to the cancellation of the dazzling star. They wished the 28-year-old “a speedy recovery” and hope to welcome him back to the grass courts at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club next year, a Twitter message from the organisers read.

Last year, Kyrgios surprisingly reached the final at Wimbledon, where he only lost to Novak Djokovic in four sets after a tough battle. After that, the Australian, known for his emotional outbursts on the tennis court, was stopped by knee problems and had to take a break for almost three quarters of a year.

The Australian Open and the French Open took place without Kyrgios. He only celebrated his comeback in Stuttgart in mid-June, but lost in the first round. Afterwards, he cancelled his participation in Halle, Westphalia, and also withdrew on Mallorca shortly before the start of the tournament.
