Shortly before the new quarterly report, Electronic Arts (EA) is cutting more jobs. Two projects are being discontinued at its subsidiary Respawn Entertainment, affecting hundreds of employees in total.
On Tuesday evening, Respawn described the job cuts within its own ranks, which are expected to affect around 100 employees, as “targeted team adjustments.” The reason given was the discontinuation of two projects “in the early stages of development.” According to reports, one of these is a title in the Titanfall series.
However, the wave of layoffs at EA is not over yet: according to US media reports, the Californian video game giant is set to cut at least 200 more jobs. According to IGN, most of these will be in support, but other departments will also be affected. Bloomberg even reports that 300 to 400 employees will be laid off.
Worrying industry developments
At the beginning of 2025, there had already been massive job cuts at subsidiary BioWare. About a year earlier, EA’s global workforce had been reduced by around five percent. The industry is going through a difficult phase: Riot Games, Microsoft, and Sony alone cut more than 3,000 gaming jobs in 2024.
The layoffs are repeatedly attributed to short-sighted business decisions made during the COVID pandemic. Gaming experienced a significant upswing in 2019/20, and developers hired far too many new people in some cases.
