Swiatek and Keys reach Australian Open semi-finals

Iga Swiatek and Madison Keys win their quarter-final matches in Melbourne. They will now face each other in a direct duel for a place in the final.

The Polish Iga Swiatek and the American Madison Keys have advanced to the semi-finals of the Australian Open and will play for one of the two final tickets. Swiatek, ranked second in the world, defeated Emma Navarro of the United States 6-1, 6-2, remaining without losing a set in the tournament.

“It’s great to be in the semi-finals. I’m going for more,” said Swiatek, who has only lost 14 games in her five previous matches. According to data provider Opta, only three players have lost fewer games in the history of the Grand Slam tournament in Melbourne, including German tennis icon Steffi Graf in 1989.

Previously, Keys, seeded at number 19, had fought her way into the top four with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina. “Madison is a great player with a lot of experience,” Swiatek said of her next opponent.

The duel between Swiatek and Keys will also take place on Thursday, as will the second women’s semi-final between title defender Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus and Paula Badosa from Spain.
