“Such a shame”: Spain pulls out of eEuro 2025

UEFA eEuro will officially return in 2025, the association has announced. Germany will participate again, but one major nation will be missing. The location and exact dates of the final tournament are yet to be announced.

eSport had already reported it a few months ago – now the return of UEFA eEuro has been officially confirmed. EA SPORTS FC will once again be the platform for the competition. Germany, which narrowly missed out on the title in the inaugural competition, will also be taking part again. Umut Gültekin was only defeated by Anders Vejrgang in the final.

However, one major nation is missing from the announcement: Spain. The association did not explain why. In sporting terms, the decision comes as a surprise, given that Adrián Cifuentes reached the semi-finals in the last tournament. Analyst Bassy Saad sees the reasons as more structural: “No World Cup players, no global successes and a national league dominated by foreign players in 2024/2025. Is that down to the players? No. The problem isn’t talent – Spain has a huge pool of young players to draw from – but rather the lack of grassroots programs and eSports expertise.“

In summary, it could be said that ”in Spain, LaLiga FC Pro has been reduced to a mere event and is no longer an eSports industry. It’s a real shame, because Spain has everything: talent, expertise, and community.”

Selection phase already underway

For all other nations, the eEuro has already begun: the selection phase for starters will run from August 11 to 24. How the DFB will determine its participants is still open. If associations hand over the process to UEFA or EA SPORTS, online qualifying matches will be held on August 23 and 24.

Once all starters have been determined, the online group stage will begin on October 18 and 19. The games will initially be played using the Swiss system, followed by a double knockout format. The final round is scheduled for December, but an exact date and venue have not yet been confirmed. Last year, Germany hosted the event. The best nations will receive prize money and a place in the play-ins of the FC Pro World Cup.
