Strong Kerber misses surprise

Angelique Kerber missed out on a surprise despite a good performance. In the round of 16 of the WTA tournament in Rome, the 36-year-old three-time Grand Slam winner lost 5:7, 3:6 to the Polish top seed

Former world number one Angelique Kerber missed out on a surprise against the world’s best tennis player despite a good performance. In the round of 16 of the WTA tournament in Rome, the 36-year-old three-time Grand Slam winner lost to the Polish top favorite Iga Swiatek 5:7, 3:6.

Kerber, who had not lost a set in the first three rounds, was nevertheless able to chalk up the dress rehearsal for the French Open, which begins on May 20, as a success. Kerber had only won three matches this year at the tournament in Indian Wells in March, where she was also knocked out in the round of 16.

In the third duel with Kerber, the 14 years younger world number one Swiatek, who has already won the tournament in Rome twice, achieved her third victory. Kerber, whose best result in Rome was the semi-final in 2012, kept up very well, especially in the first set, and showed herself to be in strong form.
