Stephen Curry has accepted a role as assistant general manager of Davidson College, his former university. This has been confirmed to ESPN by college officials.
Curry is the first active athlete from one of the major US sports leagues to take an active role in the front office of an NCAA team. The head chef played for the university in North Carolina from 2006 to 2009. At Davidson College, he is to serve as a kind of role model for the boys and girls.
There he will work alongside General Manager Austin Buntz, who used to work in marketing for Under Armour. Curry recently signed a lifelong contract with the sports brand.
“The experience at Davidson is second to none,” Curry said in a statement released by the college. ”My journey from arriving at Davidson in 2006 to today shows that I have had the chance to play basketball at the highest level, receive an amazing education, build an amazing network through the Davidson alumni, and continue to represent the Davidson flag. I want talented student-athletes of strong character to be able to have the same experience.”
Curry part of an eight-figure fund
Curry will also launch an eight-figure fund for the men’s and women’s programs together with his wife Ayesha and other supporters. Matt Berman, also part of the fund and a longtime college soccer player, will become another assistant general manager of the team.
Curry was twice named Conference Player of the Year at the university and set the NCAA record for threes made in a season as a sophomore. He returned to the university in 2022 to complete his bachelor’s degree.
