Staying in the RB universe? Werner set to move to New York

Timo Werner is close to a move to the US. The New York Red Bulls, featuring former Leipzig player Emil Forsberg and coach Sandro Schwarz, are likely to win the race for the former German international.

At 29, Timo Werner is apparently embarking on a new adventure. As first reported by the “Leipziger Volkszeitung,” the striker is moving across the pond from RB Leipzig. According to the report, the deal with the New York Red Bulls is already in the works. According to kicker, the parties are in talks, but a final agreement has not yet been reached.

In the Big Apple, Werner would be reunited with German coach Sandro Schwarz, his former Leipzig teammate Emil Forsberg, ex-Mainz player Alexander Hack, and former Bayern striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting. Enough German-speaking supporters to help him settle in.

In any case, Werner, who had a contract until June 30, 2026, had no future in Leipzig. The Saxons were keen to get the striker off their payroll this summer—the former German international was earning over $11 million a year.

Just a spectator in Bilbao – ambitious project in New York

Werner was equally unsuccessful at his most recent loan spell in north London, making just 41 competitive appearances (three goals, seven assists) for Tottenham Hotspur in a year and a half. Last February, Werner was even dropped from the Spurs’ Europa League squad to make room for Mathys Tel, who was on loan from Munich at the time (and has since been signed permanently). As a result, Werner was left to watch from the sidelines as his former club triumphed in the Europa League final in Bilbao.

Now the time has come to take on a new challenge. Werner was no longer in demand in Europe’s top leagues, especially at the top clubs. The MLS is set to offer him a new opportunity. The project in New York is also ambitious, with the Red Bulls reaching the final at the end of last season – but it was Los Angeles Galaxy and Marco Reus who celebrated.

Perhaps Werner is the missing piece of the puzzle? In the current season, the New York club is seventh in the Eastern Conference with 28 points from 19 games.
