Even if Serena Williams does not return to the tennis stage as expected, her sporting legacy will remain. After her professional debut in 1995, the US American has set many career milestones

This is Serena Williams in numbers:

4 – Williams left the Olympics with a total of four gold medals. She won once in singles (2012) and three times in doubles with sister Venus (2000, 2008, 2012).

5 – Williams not only triumphed five times at the WTA Finals, she also crowned herself the oldest winner of the prestigious season-ending tournament in women’s tennis in 2014 at the age of 33.

6 – No other player has won more US Open titles than Williams. Only compatriot Chris Evert also has six singles titles in New York.

9 – In nine Grand Slam finals in which Serena faced her sister Venus, the two years younger Serena won seven times.

13 – The combined 13 Grand Slam titles on the hard courts of the US Open and Australian Open are unrivalled.

14 – Even though she was eliminated in the first round of the US Open: With 14 Grand Slam tournament wins, Serena and Venus Williams were once a force in doubles.

17 – As a teenager aged 17, Williams won her first Grand Slam title at the US Open. Along the way, she beat big names like Kim Clijsters, Conchita Martinez, Monica Seles, Lindsay Davenport and Martina Hingis.
