Special F1 livery in Miami: Ferrari opts for blue instead of red tones

Ferrari wants to celebrate its 70th anniversary on the US market with a special look at the Miami Grand Prix – the SF-24 is to shine in shades of blue instead of red

Ferrari will line up at the upcoming Miami Grand Prix not in its iconic red livery, but in shades of blue! This is to honor Ferrari’s historic position in US motorsport and celebrate the manufacturer’s 70th anniversary in the American market.

The special design is no coincidence. It references the brand’s heritage, with two shades of blue from its history making a comeback: Azzurro La Plata and Azzurro Dino.

Azzurro La Plata is a light shade of blue and the national racing color of Argentina. It is also a similar shade to that of two-time world champion Alberto Ascari. The Italian often wore a shirt in this color and a matching helmet.

Another connection between Ferrari and this color is the racing overalls of the 1960s, which drivers such as John Surtees and Chris Amon as well as Niki Lauda wore on the track for the team in his first Formula 1 season.

Azzurro Dino is a darker shade that was last driven by Clay Regazzoni in 1974, before the iconic red color scheme also became the norm for racing suits.

The choice of color is also a historical allusion to the connection between Ferrari and the American racing scene. For example, Ferrari competed in the 1964 US Grand Prix with white and blue livery – a combination that was also used on some other Ferrari racing cars of the North American Racing Team.

The planned special livery for the Miami Grand Prix is to be unveiled directly in Florida. While a date for the unveiling has not been confirmed, there are a series of events to honor Ferrari starting as early as April 28th.

These will culminate on race Sunday, when two blue Ferrari 296 GTSs will lead a lap of honor around the Formula 1 circuit before the start of the race.

In previous years, the Scuderia has also opted for a special livery on certain occasions. At the 2023 Italian Grand Prix, for example, yellow color accents were added. To celebrate the 1000th race at the 2020 Tuscan Grand Prix in Mugello, the team opted for a burgundy look
