Sörloth will miss the match against Leverkusen

Alexander Sörloth will be missing from Atletico Madrid’s important Champions League clash with Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

The Norwegian sustained a “moderately severe muscle injury” in the Rojiblancos’ 4-0 Copa del Rey victory over second-division side Elche, which, according to his club, in a statement, the injury will most likely keep him out of the capital club’s next two games – the league game at CD Leganes (Saturday, 4:15 p.m.) and the CL duel with Leverkusen. The following reunion with ex-club FC Villarreal (January 26) also seems to be in jeopardy.

Sörloth scored twice in the 8th and 29th minute in Elche to lay the foundation for his team’s cup success, before muscle problems forced him to be replaced by Nahuel Molina at half-time.

Morata successor with teething troubles

The 29-year-old was brought in from league rivals Villarreal to replace Morata at the Colchoneros this summer. After some initial difficulties, the former Leipzig player has since increased his goal tally. In La Liga, he has eight successes and is therefore – although often only brought on by coach Diego Simeone – Atletico’s top scorer. For example, the Scandinavian scored a last-gasp winner as a substitute to give his team a 2-1 away win over FC Barcelona just before Christmas. In the Champions League, however, Soerloth is still waiting to score.

Atletico are currently in 11th place in the premier class before the game against Werkself, level on points with Bayern Munich with twelve points from six games, which would lead to the play-offs. Leverkusen are fourth in the XXL standings with one point more.

In La Liga, Madrid, who are currently on a 15-game winning streak, are leading the pack with a one-point lead over city rivals Real and six over Barcelona before the game at underdog Leganes.
