Siegemund wants to carry on as usual

The 37-year-old wants to take time to process her success in London – and then carry on as usual.

Laura Siegemund remains unfazed by her big jump in the world rankings after her bitter exit from Wimbledon. “I’m trying to think about the rankings as little as possible,” said the 37-year-old after her narrow three-set defeat to top star Aryna Sabalenka in the quarterfinals of the tennis classic. She added that it doesn’t change her tournament planning or her focus “at all.”

On Monday, Siegemund will climb around 50 places from 104th to the top 60, which will open up more opportunities for her in future singles tournament planning. “Hopefully, it will be enough to be in the main draw at one or two tournaments,” said the Swabian, who will not be scaling back her beloved doubles matches as a result.

She now wants to take some time to “let it all sink in” and then “it will really sink in,” emphasized Siegemund, who reached the quarterfinals in London for the first time and celebrated one of the greatest successes of her career: “Once I’ve had a chance to relax, I’ll be really proud of it.”

Women’s national coach Torben Beltz described Siegemund’s performance in an interview with SID as an “incredible success,” saying it was “really unbelievable. That was really strong. I’m totally happy for her.” With Queen’s winner Tatjana Maria and Siegemund, two German women aged 37 have recently celebrated success. However, Beltz is not worried about the future of German women’s tennis. “We have young people coming through behind them,” said Beltz, adding: “After six months in office, I am looking forward to the future.”
