Shock for Nina Meinke: her opponent was unable to compete due to injury

Shock for Nina Meinke: The Berlin fighter’s world championship fight against superstar Amanda Serrano has been canceled right before the start. The four-time world champion from Puerto Rico was unable to compete due to an eye injury. Serrano announced this to her German challenger in the ring.

“I’m absolutely devastated,” said Meinke: “We all wanted this fight, Puerto Rico wanted this fight. I really hope we can pull it off again. I hope Amanda will recover quickly. I’m ready when you are.”

Meinke would have been the first German to box over the full men’s distance. The featherweight fight was already set and the arena in San Juan was sold out with 18,500 spectators. Serrano’s four world championship belts were on the line.

“I wanted to put on a show,” said Serrano, who wanted to defend her world titles in her home country for the first time: “But I’ve had a problem with my eyes for a few days. I wanted to fight in front of my people.” However, the doctors did not allow her to do so due to the injury.

“It raises questions,” said Regina Halmich, TV expert on DAZN and former long-time world champion: “And I really have to say that if she already had something in her eye yesterday, it’s not right to leave Team Meinke in the dark like that. I feel sorry for Nina. “
