Sevilla Pro Rafa Mir Sentenced to Eight and a Half Years in Prison

Spanish professional soccer player Rafa Mir has been sentenced to eight and a half years in prison for rape and assault.

The verdict against the 28-year-old professional, who is under contract with FC Sevilla, was handed down by the Fourth Criminal Chamber of Valencia and upheld on Monday by the High Court of the Autonomous Community of Valencia. However, it is not yet final.

The court found it proven that in September 2024, Rafa Mir, together with his friend Pablo Jara—who is also a soccer player—took two women to Mir’s villa in Betera, a posh suburb of Valencia. It is alleged that rape and assault occurred there. In addition to the prison sentence, Mir was ordered to pay 64,000 euros in compensation for pain and suffering to the victims. His friend Jara received a prison sentence of two and a half years and must pay 6,280 euros in compensation for pain and suffering.

At the time of the incident, Rafa Mir was on loan from Sevilla FC to Valencia CF. The forward has been under contract with Sevilla since 2021; his contract runs until 2027. Last season, the center forward was on loan to Elche CF and scored eight goals in 27 league games. He won the silver medal at the 2021 Olympic Games with the Spanish Olympic team.
