Moritz Broschinski is leaving the Ruhr region for Switzerland. VfL Bochum is receiving a seven-figure transfer fee.
A very strong preseason and perhaps also his goal in VfL Bochum’s 1-4 defeat in Darmstadt on the opening day of the season had brought Broschinski to the attention of scouts. Scouts from Switzerland had recently been watching the 24-year-old at the Böllenfalltor stadium.
Now, champions and cup winners FC Basel have secured the striker’s services, after Swiss leaders FC St. Gallen were also said to be interested in Broschinski’s former coach from his time at BVB, Enrico Maaßen.
Five goals in the Bundesliga
According to reports, VfL will receive a seven-figure transfer fee for the former Cottbus player, who was under contract with the Ruhr club until next summer. Broschinski played for FC Energie and Dortmund II in the third division before moving to Castroper in 2022, where the Finsterwalder native made 70 first division appearances and scored five goals.
He has signed a contract with Basel until 2029. “He is tall, extremely fast, and very dynamic—he has a profile that we were missing in our attack. He also has a great mentality; we could sense that he really wanted to join us,” said Basel’s sporting director Daniel Stucki about the new signing.
In Basel, Broschinski will join Marwin Hitz and Xherdan Shaqiri, both well known from the Bundesliga. After winning the double and the surprise departure of their coach, FCB currently has room for improvement. At the weekend, the “Bebbi” lost 1-3 to crisis-stricken FC Lugano and are currently only fourth in the Super League table with a balanced record.
Against Malmö in the play-offs
For Broschinski, Basel also offers the chance to play in European competition. In the Champions League qualifiers, the club will face FC Copenhagen in the play-offs.
