Setback for captain Latza

The captain’s reintegration into Schalke team training is delayed, according to kicker information, muscular problems have slowed Danny Latza down on his way to a comeback.

Danny Latza has made exceptionally good progress in recent weeks. After his ligament injury, which forced Schalke’s central midfield figure to be substituted after half an hour in the first match of the season against HSV (1:3) on 23 July, the captain showed great fighting qualities – three weeks ago he returned to training on the pitch, albeit only individually. According to kicker information, however, the 31-year-old then suffered a setback in the form of muscular problems.

That is the reason why his reintegration into team training has now been delayed. Schalke and its midfielder need not be too concerned, however. The originally envisaged downtime of around three months in view of his external ligament injury will not be extended by the setback, because Latza was right on schedule.

The Königsblauen want to stick to the idea of integrating their captain into the matchday squad after the next Bundesliga break. The earliest date for a nomination is the away game at Hannover 96 on 15 October.

Due to his absence and the long-term forced break of midfielder Blendi Idrizi, the Schalke team had decided to upgrade their personnel with a view to the eight position even after the end of the transfer period. Marc Rzatkowski is still busy catching up on his fitness – the 31-year-old last played for the Red Bulls in New York until December 2020 and has been out of contract since then.

Read what Rzatkowski has to say about his plan at Schalke and his new employer in Thursday’s edition or in the eMagazine.
