Serbia through thanks to Djokovic

Superstar Novak Djokovic leads his country into the quarter-finals of the Davis Cup. Andy Murray is emotional in victory against Switzerland

Tennis star Novak Djokovic has led Serbia into the quarter-finals of the Davis Cup just five days after his triumph at the US Open. The 36-year-old defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-3, 6-4 to give Serbia an early 2-0 lead over Spain in Valencia. Earlier, Laslo Djere had won 6-4, 6-4 against Albert Ramos-Vinolas.

It was Djokovic’s first Davis Cup appearance since losing in the semi-finals to Croatia in 2021, when he won the 24th Grand Slam title of his career in New York last weekend.

“I’m on cloud nine with everything that’s happened on the tennis court lately,” Djokovic said, “To play for Serbia, for my country, is something completely different. It’s a big responsibility and pressure, but it’s also a privilege and an honour.” The knockout stage will be played in Malaga in November.

Meanwhile, Andy Murray claimed an emotional victory for Great Britain. After beating Switzerland’s Leandro Riedi 6-7 (7-9), 6-4, 6-4 in Manchester, Murray revealed he had missed his grandmother’s funeral because of the match. “Today is a tough day for me, today is my grandma’s funeral. I’m sorry for my family that I can’t be there, but grandma, this is for you. “
