Schmid still missing, Keitel and Schade can play

The COVID-19 illness apparently hit Freiburg right-back Jonathan Schmid hard. Whether it will be enough for defender Philipp Lienhart will only be decided at short notice.

With 20,000 spectators, the Europa-Park-Stadion of SC Freiburg will be sold out on Saturday against RB Leipzig – at least as far as the Corona conditions allow. The two U-21 internationals Yannik Keitel and Kevin Schade will also be in attendance.

Their teammate in the national team, Shinta Appelkamp from Düsseldorf, had contracted the corona virus during the training course. “It was tested and everyone is negative. From there, there are no restrictions,” SC coach Christian Streich said about possible quarantine orders against the young professionals. All the other national players also returned to Breisgau as planned.

Defender Philipp Lienhart did not travel at all, as he had to call off Austria national coach Franco Foda due to an operation on his teeth. “He looks okay. We’ll have to see whether we say it’s possible or not,” said Streich with a view to the Leipzig game.

After COVID-19 illness: Schmid’s return is “not foreseeable “

On the other hand, right-back Jonathan Schmid will be missing. He was already infected with the coronavirus at the end of August, the COVID-19 disease apparently hit him harder. “He’s back in training gear, can work with the physiotherapists and run a bit,” said Streich.

However, he said it was “not foreseeable” and “speculative” when Schmid would be an option in a competitive match again. “That won’t happen in the short term,” Streich fears. Lukas Kübler had recently proven himself as a replacement on the right side of SC Freiburg’s defensive chain.
