Schiller takes over Rasta Vechta for the new season

Rasta Vechta has found a successor for head coach Ty Harrelson, who is leaving at the end of the season. The new man has only known the league as an assistant so far

Rasta Vechta has found a successor for its head coach Ty Harrelson, who is leaving in the summer. The German basketball club announced on Easter Monday that Martin Schiller will take over as head coach from the new season. The 42-year-old, who has been given a two-year contract, has previously only worked abroad as a head coach. Vechta’s current coach Harrelson (43) is moving to league rivals Ulm for the new season.

Schiller has coached Spanish first-division club Casademont Zaragoza and Lithuanian Euroleague participant Zalgiris Kaunas, among others, and worked as an assistant for Quakenbrück and Ludwigsburg in the Bundesliga. “Rasta is a very ambitious club that has experienced ups and downs. They are currently working with great intensity and we want to continue this,” Schiller is quoted as saying in a club press release.

“In his career as a coach, Martin Schiller has gained experience in various basketball cultures and at the highest level. His basketball socialization in Germany was an important factor in his selection,” said Vechta’s sports director Gerrit Kersten-Thiele, explaining the decision in favor of Schiller.

Schiller’s predecessor Harrelson will move to ratiopharm Ulm in the summer, where master coach Anton Gavel is surprisingly leaving for Bamberg. In the current season, newly promoted Vechta is in fifth place in the BBL and has the best chances of making the play-offs.
