The tennis star from Belarus will now face Amanda Anisimova at the year-end tournament in Riyadh.
With a perfect record of three wins from three matches, world number one Aryna Sabalenka is in the semifinals of the WTA Finals in Riyadh. At the end of the group stage, the tennis star from Belarus defeated defending champion Coco Gauff (USA) 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 and will now face another American. Sabalenka will play Amanda Anisimova, who finished second in the parallel group, on Friday in the year-end tournament. In the other semifinal of the $15.5 million event in Saudi Arabia, Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan, who like Sabalenka is undefeated, will face Jessica Pegula (USA). Pegula booked her place in the semifinals on Thursday with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Italy’s Jasmine Paolini, who had already been eliminated. Rybakina had already secured the group victory on Wednesday. Sabalenka lost to Gauff in the final of this year’s French Open, but this time the 27-year-old came out on top.
