Rune cheers – and raves about Becker

Defending champion Holger Rune has reached the round of 16 at the Masters tournament in Paris.

Defending champion Holger Rune has reached the round of 16 at the Masters tournament in Paris. The Danish world number seven defeated Austrian Dominic Thiem 6-4, 6-2 in front of his new coach Boris Becker and remains on course for ATP Finals in Turin (November 12-19).

“It’s a tough match. This is the last rush of the season,” Rune told the ATP Podcast in Paris. He described the cooperation with Becker so far as “great. What we train, you see on the court. We’ve made some changes to get back on track.”

In his first tournament with Becker, Rune most recently reached the semifinals at the ATP tournament in Basel. The 20-year-old’s big goal is the season finale in Turin, which would be the first finals appearance of his career.

In the round of 16, Rune will face Germany’s Daniel Altmaier on Thursday evening. Before that, Olympic champion Alexander Zverev will battle it out against Stefanos Tsitsipas for a place in the quarterfinals.
