Revolution in League of Legends: Riot tests WASD controls

Left, right, left—until now, characters in League of Legends could only be controlled with a mouse. In the future, this will also be possible with a keyboard.

For years, LoL fans have been asking for an alternative to the classic mouse controls. Developer Riot Games now wants to fulfill this wish: In the future, it will be possible to control the characters using the usual W, A, S, and D keys.

However, mouse control will not be replaced. “As we are long-time League players ourselves, we approached this project with a lot of respect for classic MOBA controls. At the same time, we believe that WASD controls offer a fresh but familiar option for experienced and new players alike, without changing what makes League great,” explains Riot.

More intuitive controls, especially for beginners

Beginners in particular should benefit: “WASD controls are the most common input method for PC games today. Many players automatically put their fingers on these keys when they return to League from another game. This will make the controls more intuitive for them.”

An exact launch date has not yet been set. Riot is currently preparing an extended trial period that will “begin soon and include several patches.” Initial internal tests and feedback rounds with professionals – including at MSI – have already taken place. The developer is now looking for more testers to further refine the new control scheme.

Riot Games is fine-tuning details of the new WASD controls

According to Riot itself, the WASD controls already feel “pretty good” with most champions after initial testing. Based on player feedback, a few adjustments have been made.

For example, the code for abilities with channeling mechanics – such as Miss Fortune’s Ultimate – has been reworked so that holding down the WASD keys no longer accidentally cancels the attack. Changes have also been made to Ambessa’s passive ability to prevent players from taking advantage of minimal jump distances.

In addition, new targeting options have been introduced for the “Blitz” spell to make teleports in the direction of movement or over a wall in the opposite direction feel more natural. Riot announced that it will continue to monitor the testing process and promised: “There were also a few pretty… interesting bugs that we’ll talk about in the future!”
