For around two years, FC Barcelona played their home games at the city’s Olympic Stadium. Now the Catalans are set to return to their actual home ground.
On August 10, the time will have come: FC Barcelona will inaugurate the renovated Camp Nou. As part of the annual Joan Gamper Trophy, the Blaugrana stadium will not yet be fully accessible, but players and fans will still be guaranteed “the thrill” that the “legendary temple” brings with it.
However, it will likely be some time before the new Camp Nou is finally completed. The third upper tier, VIP areas, the roof, some interior spaces, and the stadium’s surroundings are still under construction. That is why the Catalans are striving to adapt “access and services” to the circumstances as best as possible.
Return postponed several times
The stadium last hosted a match on May 28, 2023, when FC Barcelona comfortably beat a decimated Mallorca side 3-0. Since then, the reigning double winners’ home games have been played at the Olimpic Lluis Companys, partly because construction work was delayed and the previously planned partial opening of the Camp Nou had to be postponed several times.
But now the wait is over, with a “historic moment for the club and its supporters” imminent, according to a statement. After all, it is a “symbolic and emotional step into the future.” The modernization of the long-serving stadium will not only increase capacity to over 100,000 seats, but is also part of the “Espai Barca” transformation project. With this project, the club and the city aim to take on a pioneering role in sports and entertainment in Europe on the site around the stadium and academy.
