The US Open has come too soon for Grigor Dimitrov. For the first time since 2011, he has withdrawn from a major tournament.
Bulgarian tennis pro Grigor Dimitrov has withdrawn from the US Open due to injury, missing a Grand Slam tournament for the first time since 2011 after 58 consecutive appearances.
The 34-year-old suffered a partial tear of his right pectoral muscle in the Wimbledon quarterfinals against eventual winner Jannik Sinner while leading 2-0 in sets and is working on his comeback, but the last major tournament of the year in New York (starting August 24) is coming too soon.
Dimitrov currently plagued by bad luck
The US Open organizers announced the cancellation on Tuesday. This ends a remarkable streak: Dimitrov had played in 58 consecutive Grand Slam tournaments since the 2011 Australian Open, a record among all active players and the fifth-longest streak ever. The record is held by Feliciano Lopez with 79 consecutive tournaments.
Physical problems have been plaguing Dimitrov, once ranked number three in the world, for quite some time: the Bulgarian has had to withdraw from the last five Grand Slams due to injury, including last year’s US Open quarterfinals.
