Reinforcement for Gattuso: Cavani signs with Valencia

Italy, France, England – and now Spain. Edinson Cavani is moving to La Liga, with the 35-year-old joining Valencia FC, it was officially announced on Monday evening.

Cavani signed a two-year contract with “Los Che”, initially there had been speculation of a one-year deal. Nice also courted the striker, but according to “Marca” it was Cavani’s heart’s desire to lace up his boots in Spain once again, although the offer from the Favre club is said to have been higher.

Cavani, who will be presented at the Mestalla on Tuesday, has already been in Madrid for individual training. The Uruguayan has joined the club under coach Gennaro Gattuso, who took over from José Bordalas in the summer, after spells with Palermo, Napoli, Paris St Germain and Manchester United. For the Red Devils, Cavani last appeared in 15 league games (two goals) and four Champions League games (no goals).

Valencia are a shadow of former days

Valencia’s glory years are a few years back, despite their 2019 cup win. At the turn of the millennium, the club was still a regular in the Champions League, even reaching the final twice and becoming Spanish champions in 2004. Financial problems threw Valencia far behind.

In 2014, Peter Lim bought Valencia FC, but even the investor from Singapore did not manage to complete the new stadium, for example – the “Nou Mestalla” is still a construction site and a million-dollar grave at the same time. Completion has meanwhile been postponed to summer 2025, the total costs will then amount to approx. 350 million euros.
