Record transfer complete: Kiel bring Tolkin from the USA

Holstein Kiel have signed left-back John Tolkin as expected. The storks have spent more than ever before on the 22-year-old.

For established first division clubs, it is not a large sum, but for a newcomer like Kiel, it certainly is. The north Germans spent three million euros on the transfer of John Tolkin, more than they have ever spent on a player. The most expensive new signing so far was Armin Gigovic, who came to the fjord from FC Midtjylland before the season and cost 1.5 million euros.

The young left-back already has a fair amount of experience. Tolkin played 114 games (seven goals) for the New York Red Bulls, where he also received his training, and has four caps for the USA. The 1.70-meter wingback made two appearances at the 2023 Gold Cup.

Tolkin fits Kiel’s “requirements profile”

“With John Tolkin, we were able to sign an experienced player for our left side despite his age,” said Carsten Wehlmann, KSV’s sporting director, in a statement. The newcomer, ‘with his qualities,’ fits exactly into Kiel’s ‘requirements profile.’

Tolkin himself is looking forward to “a great challenge” in the Bundesliga. “My goal is to get here as quickly as possible and get to know my team in order to contribute to a successful second half of the season,” said the defensive midfielder, who will play for the storks in the future with the number 47 on his back.
