Real travel to Saudi Arabia for Supercopa without Bale

The Spanish Supercopa begins in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday. Real Madrid, one of four participants, have announced the squad for it. Gareth Bale is not on the list.

24 players have been nominated by Carlo Ancelotti for the competition. While Dani Carvajal and Luka Jovic (after quarantine), who have been ailing recently, are included, Gareth Bale is out. “He has back problems,” Ancelotti explained. “He doesn’t feel well, he can’t push one hundred percent. And until then he is not usable.” Mariano Diaz is also out due to thigh problems.

The Welshman has only featured in three games this season, scoring one goal in his 193 minutes of play. He made his last appearance for the Royals on 28 August in the away game at Betis (1-0). The 32-year-old was in the squad for the 2-0 win over Atletico Madrid on 12 December, but did not feature. Bale’s contract expires in the summer, an extension is extremely unlikely after the numerous quarrels in recent years.

Real play their Supercopa semi-final against FC Barcelona in Riyadh on Wednesday, with Atletico Madrid and Athletic Bilbao meeting the following day. The final is scheduled for Sunday at 8pm.
