Rangnick’s rejection turns into a disaster for Bayern

How unattractive can a club have become for coaches? After the rejection of Ralf Rangnick, the fifth coach now prefers to work elsewhere rather than at FC Bayern, which now has to give serious thought to its future.

The fact that Xabi Alonso had committed himself to Bayer Leverkusen, at least for another year, is understandable for everyone at Säbener Straße. The attempt to install Julian Nagelsmann, despite strong opposition at the top of the club, was not clever and was met with incomprehension by many at FC Bayern – especially because it was suggested to the outside world that Ralf Rangnick was only the C-solution. Now, this Thursday, it is clear that the Austrian national team coach will not be taking over from current head coach Thomas Tuchel at FC Bayern either.

This means that the third coach – including Nagelsmann’s official DFB commitment – now prefers to work elsewhere than at the German record champions. In fact, there are now five coaches who prefer to work elsewhere. Because in the meantime, Unai Emery has also made his commitment to Aston Villa and Tuchel, as things stand now in a purely theoretical case, cannot imagine staying and wants to take on another challenge. Which is a declaration of bankruptcy for FC Bayern

Why has Bayern become so unattractive for coaches?

At the weekend, Rangnick signaled to FCB that he was willing to take over as head coach from the summer. On Monday and Tuesday, he renewed his intention in talks with the Munich bosses, who had been relying on it. The “yes” from him was definitely there, even though the 65-year-old has been keeping a close eye on the situation at and around FC Bayern. Could something have happened? In any case, the U-turn followed on Wednesday. The Bavarian decision-makers were shocked – and now, in addition to the more difficult coaching issue, have to seriously consider why the club has become so unattractive for many coaches

Because the search for a top solution is now set to zero and will be extremely difficult after the recent events. Simply because one thing is certain: The next candidate is certainly not the first, nor the second or third choice. A disaster for Bayern. How will the sporting directors around Max Eberl and Christoph Freund communicate this to the next (preferred) candidate? It will take very good arguments and a lot of imagination. Or the rather undesirable interim solution
