Purchase obligation takes effect: Florence signs Gosens from Union

It was only a matter of time. It is now clear that Robin Gosens will remain at AC Florence beyond the summer, where the former Union professional feels right at home.

After just one year in the Bundesliga with Union Berlin, Robin Gosens left the capital at short notice in August 2024 to join Fiorentina. Initially on loan with the prospect of a permanent move, which will now happen, even if official confirmation is still pending.

Because Gosens has now fulfilled the necessary requirement, namely playing 60 percent of the possible competitive games, the purchase option has been converted into a purchase obligation. Union will therefore receive a transfer fee of €7.5 million in the summer. Whether Florence will qualify for international competition remains to be seen.

Gosens has integrated well into coach Raffaele Palladino’s team and is once again impressing with his goal-scoring prowess – six goals and nine assists in 39 competitive games – and leadership qualities. The latter also applies off the pitch: in mid-January, the former Inter Milan, Atalanta Bergamo and Heracles Almelo professional publicly shook up the team during a difficult period (“We’re throwing everything away”) – with success.

“I’ve learned a lot from the Italian way”

“I just feel right at home here,” “When my head is clear and I feel appreciated, it has a very positive effect on my performance. I’m in top shape physically and mentally, and that combination is hard to beat. And that certainly has something to do with Italy, because this country is very good for me. I come home and see smiling faces when I see my family.”

That’s why he already feels a little Italian: ”I’ve certainly learned a lot from the Italian way of life. The relaxed attitude, for example, the positive outlook. It sounds so banal, but Italians give every day the chance to be the best day of their lives. That’s what I appreciate most.”

And now he can do that as a regular player for AC Florence, all linked to a very personal wish: ”My big dream would be to win a title for this soccer-mad city of Florence. We’re good enough to achieve that. Maybe it will happen this year.” This Thursday, Gosens & Co. will play in the Conference League for a place in the final – it would be their third in a row.
