Toto Wolff’s son Jack won his first karting title at the weekend – but why the Mercedes team principal is playing it down
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff had two reasons to celebrate on Sunday. “We’ve got a one-two today,” he laughed in an interview with ORF following Kimi Antonelli’s victory in the Formula 1 race in Madrid. Perhaps the Austrian was even more delighted, however, about the second victory mentioned, which took place in Italy.
It was there that his son Jack clinched his first karting title. “He’s nine and has won the under-10 championship, the Minis,” Wolff reported proudly. Jack won the final race at the weekend and with it the title in the IAME Italy X30 U10 class.
Like a pro, the nine-year-old then gave an interview and explained: “It was good. We had a few wins and also a few bad races. But in the end, we fought hard and won the championship. So I’m really happy.”
“Before the season, I wouldn’t have thought I’d win almost every race,” said Wolff, who had already celebrated two victories before his triumph in the final. Incidentally, there was another boy with a well-known surname competing in the championship alongside him: Johan Berger, son of former Formula 1 driver Gerhard Berger.
Meanwhile, ORF expert Alexander Wurz quipped to his father Toto, asking when we could expect to see Jack in Formula 1. “Not for a long time yet, and we’re not talking about that either,” the Mercedes team principal immediately dismissed the suggestion, explaining that there was still a long way to go. “Then there are the Juniors and Seniors [im Kart]. So let’s keep our feet on the ground,” said the Austrian.
Jack Wolff was born in 2017. As well as his father Toto, his mother Susie Wolff also has a wealth of experience in motorsport. Now aged 43, she spent seven years racing in the DTM during her active career and was also a Formula 1 test driver for Williams. She has been head of the F1 Academy since 2023.
