Several weeks after his public confession, there is an update in the Granit Xhaka case. The public prosecutor’s office has reached its decision. The Swiss national team captain has now announced himself what penalty has been imposed on him.
A few weeks ago, Granit Xhaka publicly admitted to having obtained a fake vaccination certificate during the coronavirus pandemic. Now, the captain of the Swiss national team has spoken out to provide an update on the outcome of the criminal proceedings.
As the 34-year-old announced on Instagram, the public prosecutor’s office has sentenced him, by way of a penalty order, to a suspended fine of 50 daily rates of 3,000 francs each for obtaining a false certificate by deception. The total fine therefore amounts to 150,000 Swiss francs.
As the fine was imposed conditionally, Xhaka does not have to pay the 150,000 Swiss francs for the time being. The probation period is two years. Should he commit another offence during this time, the fine could become payable. According to his own statements, he has already settled the legal costs. In his statement, Xhaka emphasises that he accepts the decision and takes responsibility for his actions. The midfielder also thanks everyone who has sent him messages of support over the past few weeks.
