Alexander Zverev’s conqueror Felix Auger-Aliassime continued his surprising run of success, reaching the semifinals of the US Open for the second time.
The 25-year-old Canadian defeated Alex de Minaur of Australia in the quarterfinals of the US Open. Now a possible duel with top favorite Jannik Sinner awaits.
US Open: Auger-Aliassime defeats de Minaur
After an intense 4 hours and 10 minutes at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Auger-Aliassime converted his first match point to win 4-6, 7-6 (9-7), 7-5, 7-6 (7-4). De Minaur, ranked eighth in the world, once again failed to overcome his quarterfinal curse at Grand Slam tournaments. He has now failed six times in the round of the last eight at one of the four majors – never making it to the semifinals.
Auger Aliassime had surprisingly eliminated Germany’s top player Zverev in four sets in the third round. Now he has achieved another coup against a favored top ten player.
“There was a lot of nervousness today. It wasn’t particularly pretty, but that’s how Grand Slam matches are sometimes,” he said afterwards: “It feels great.”
De Minaur provides the highlight
De Minaur provided the highlight of the match in the second set when, at the end of an already strong rally, he pulled off a desperate shot through his legs—a perfectly timed lob over Auger-Aliassime.
Despite numerous avoidable errors, Auger-Aliassime came back into the match, which was not always of the highest quality, after a weak start. Overall, both players produced double-digit double faults.
World number one Sinner will face his compatriot Lorenzo Musetti in the second match of the night session, deep into the German night. It is the first all-Italian quarterfinal in Grand Slam history.
