Perfect: Gosens moves from Atalanta to Inter Milan

Robin Gosens (27) leaves Atalanta Bergamo and moves within the Serie A to champions Inter Milan. the German international signed with the Nerazzurri on Thursday. Inter confirmed the transfer in the evening.

In 2017, Robin Gosens was still playing for Heracles Almelo in the Dutch Eredivisie, but then he took off in Italy with Atalanta Bergamo and also made the jump to the DFB team via Serie A, where he was one of the bright spots at the last European Championship.

Now the left-footer is taking the next step. Gosens was last linked with relegation-threatened Premier League club Newcastle United, but he is now set to join Inter Milan after four-and-a-half years at Atalanta Bergamo, who had already shown interest in the summer of 2020.

He has successfully passed the medical check and will wear the number 18 at the San Siro in the future. Most recently, Gosens was forced to take a break due to a tendon injury in his thigh, but the 27-year-old is expected to be ready for action again in just under two weeks.

Loan with obligation to buy

The German international (13 caps, two goals) will initially join the Lombardy side on loan until the end of the season, but will then be subject to an obligation to buy “under certain conditions”, Milan announced this evening. His contract with Inter would then be valid until 2026.

In coach Simone Inzaghi’s team, Gosens is expected to play on the Nerazzurri’s left flank in a 3-5-2 – as a counterpart to Denzel Dumfries or Matteo Darmian on the right. As reigning champions, Inter currently lead Serie A – ten points behind Bergamo in fourth place. Gosens departs Bergamo with a remarkable tally of 29 goals in 146 league games.

Emotional farewell

Gosens thanked the fans of Bergamo in an emotional post. Atalanta had given him “the opportunity to play in Serie A as an unknown,” he wrote. He had matured “as a player and as a man”, had “incredible experiences and made friends for life”.

“Gosens is a player who gave us a lot. He had the hope and ambition to move to a big club, I think he deserves it. It’s an opportunity we rightly give him for what he has done with us,” said Bergamo manager Luca Percassi.
