Kyrie Irving is using his rehab not only for physical recovery, but also for personal development. The Dallas Mavericks superstar wants to finish his college education.
While recovering from a torn ACL, Kyrie Irving has set his sights on a surprising new goal: The 33-year-old plans to continue his studies at Duke University and earn his degree. He revealed this in a Twitch stream with influencer Kai Cenat.
“I’m going back to school soon, bro. I want to get my degree,” Irving explained. His motivation: more than just basketball. “I want to participate in bigger conversations. I don’t just want to read contracts myself, I want to be able to help others. Not just with experience, but with knowledge.”
Education as a mission
Irving accepted a scholarship to Duke in 2010 but only played eleven games there before entering the 2011 NBA draft and being selected as the No. 1 pick. Although he enjoyed early success in sports, the subject of education never seemed to leave him.
“I believe that knowledge is power and that you shouldn’t just rely on your career,” Irving continued. The fact that he now wants to take this step during his injury break is in keeping with the guard’s multifaceted personality, who has often spoken out on social issues in the past.
Before his injury, Irving played 50 games for the Dallas Mavericks, averaging 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 1.3 steals.
