Outstanding Walden not enough: Bayern lose to Monaco

The FC Bayern basketball players missed the second home win in the Euroleague within a few days. After Tuesday’s triumph against Zalgiris Kaunas, the cup winners lost to Monaco with 78:83.

FC Bayern München suffered a setback in the battle for the playoffs in the Basketball Euroleague. Against AS Monaco, the Cup winners lost 78:83 (35:40) on Thursday night and remain eleventh in the table with a record of 8:11 wins after their fourth defeat from the past five matches. The top eight clubs qualify for the coveted knockout round after 34 games.

An outstanding Corey Walden was too little for Italian coach Andrea Trinchieri’s side before the break. The 29-year-old US-American provided among other things with five successful distance throws with 17 points for almost half of Bayern’s points in the first 20 minutes. Nevertheless, the guests from the Principality were ahead by five points at half-time.

Monaco always with the right answer: James scores best for AS

The hosts continued to chase the deficit after the change of ends. The Monegasques around former Alba Berlin coach Sasa Obradovic had the perfect answer to every good Bayern phase and went into the final period with an eight-point lead (62:54/30th minute). At least there was another Munich player, Vladimir Lucic, who could score reliably.

The Serb or top scorer Walden (26 points) could not turn the match around. Monaco showed hardly any weaknesses in the fourth quarter and deserved to win in Munich thanks to Mike James, who scored 26 points.
