Olympic champion Mullojonov tests positive

The Uzbek has been provisionally suspended following a positive A sample.

Lassisbek Mullojonov, Olympic boxing champion in Paris, is suspected of doping. The Uzbek, who won the gold medal in the heavyweight division up to 92 kg last year, tested positive for metabolites of the anabolic-androgenic steroid methandrostenolone in an out-of-competition test and has subsequently been suspended. This was announced by the International Testing Agency (ITA), which conducts the tests on behalf of the World Boxing Association.

Methasterone is used to promote faster muscle growth and increase strength and is therefore on the list of banned substances. According to the ITA, the positive sample was taken on June 11, and Mullojonov has now been informed of the result. The athlete now has the right to request that the B sample be opened. If this confirms the result of the A sample, it would constitute a violation of anti-doping regulations. This would also apply if Mullojonow decides not to have the B sample analyzed.

In accordance with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Anti-Doping Code and the anti-doping rules of World Boxing, Mullojonov has been provisionally suspended. According to the ITA, the athlete has the right to appeal the suspension and request its lifting.

Mullojonov defeated Loren Alfonso of Azerbaijan in the final in Paris, with Uzbekistan the most successful nation in the boxing competitions with five gold medals.
