The transfer window is still open for ten days, but the English Premier League has already spent more money than ever before. A new record was set with the transfer of Noah Okafor.
On Thursday afternoon, Leeds United announced the transfer of Swiss player Noah Okafor from AC Milan.
According to information from The Athletic, the Premier League newcomers are paying the Rossoneri £18 million (around €21 million). This means that the 20 Premier League clubs have set a new transfer record: The old record of £2.36 billion was set in the summer of 2023, but according to the BBC, the transfer of Okafor has now surpassed that figure. With Okafor and the previous transfer of Leverkusen’s Amine Adli to AFC Bournemouth, spending has now risen to £2.37 billion (around €2.74 billion).
This figure is likely to rise, as the transfer window in England, as in the Bundesliga, is still open until September 1. However, it is “shorter” than in recent years, as it no longer closes at midnight, but at 7 p.m. (CEST).
And it is quite possible that the £3 billion barrier will be broken. There are still ten days left to make new signings, and several big-money transfers are still pending or in the pipeline, such as that of Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace to Arsenal.
Around 137 million euros per club
Liverpool FC is the spending champion this summer. On average, each of the 20 clubs has spent around €137 million on new players. The Reds alone have invested around €340 million in new players so far – sums that most other clubs in Europe can only dream of.
