Officially Confirmed: Bordeaux Will Be Relegated to at Least the 6th Division

One of France’s most historic clubs continues its steep decline. On Wednesday, it was officially confirmed that Girondins Bordeaux will compete in the 6th division at best.

Due to financial irregularities, it was already clear that Bordeaux could be in serious trouble. Relegation to the sixth division was on the horizon. The six-time French champion and 1996 UEFA Cup finalist (0–2 and 1–3 against FC Bayern) has been in decline since 2022 and is now falling even further. Due to insolvency, the club was excluded from all national soccer competitions in France by the French financial regulator at the end of June.

The club, which most recently competed in France’s fourth division, has filed a legal challenge against the decision. This has now proven unsuccessful, as the appeals committee of the DNCG (established in 1984 specifically to audit and oversee French professional soccer clubs) confirmed on Wednesday the exclusion of Girondins Bordeaux from the national championship. In addition, a hearing has been scheduled with the commercial court regarding the possible initiation of bankruptcy proceedings.

Thus, it is clear: A fresh start on the field can only begin in the sixth-tier Regional 1—provided the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Regional Soccer Association approves it. However, due to financial problems, the club’s liquidation is now even being considered. A commercial court must now decide on this matter.

2nd place in the 4th division

The former top French club has been struggling with massive debt for years. At one point, a takeover led by Oliver Kahn and a group of investors was even on the table, but this plan ultimately fell through in June 2025.

Last season, Bordeaux was at least still able to compete in the 4th division, where it finished in second place with 62 points, narrowly missing promotion. Now, fans will have to get used to sixth-division soccer in the coming season.
