Eric Dier exceeded expectations at FC Bayern and is now moving to AS Monaco and Adi Hütter on a free transfer.
No one at FC Bayern ever had a bad word to say about Eric Dier, and that was of course no different when he left: Even before the away game in Leipzig, the German record champions announced that the 31-year-old Englishman would be leaving the club when his contract expired, which Munich would have liked to extend. Now his destination is clear: as expected, Dier is joining AS Monaco and coach Adi Hütter on a free transfer – he had hinted at this himself recently, before the Monegasques followed up with an official announcement. He has signed a three-year contract in the principality until June 30, 2028.
“I can’t wait to get started. I’m really looking forward to wearing this shirt and getting to know everyone at the club,” said the Englishman in a short video message to AS fans.
Three goals, two assists in 47 appearances
Dier initially moved to Munich on loan from Tottenham Hotspur in January 2024, but was signed on a permanent basis after six months. Although intended as a substitute, he quickly earned himself a place in the starting line-up under coach Thomas Tuchel, partly due to injuries to his teammates, and continued to feature regularly under Tuchel’s successor Vincent Kompany. He has made 47 appearances in all competitions for FCB ahead of their final game at TSG Hoffenheim on Saturday. He scored three goals and provided two assists.
The 49-time England international impressed even without being the fastest player on the pitch, showing himself to be a thoughtful and confident center back. Kompany raved about Dier’s “absolute professionalism,” which Joshua Kimmich once summed up as follows: “If you call him tonight and tell him to come to training at 6 a.m., he’ll be there and give 100 percent.” Dier is “one of the best teammates I’ve ever had.”
There could be a reunion with Bayern as early as next season. Monaco is now guaranteed to finish third in Ligue 1 and will participate in the Champions League next season.
