Official: Alexander Zverev cancels US Open

Alexander Zverev will not take part in the US Open, which starts at the end of August, following his serious ankle injury. This was announced on Monday.

The US Open will take place without Alexander Zverev this year. This was announced by the organisers on Monday afternoon. Earlier, the “Bild” newspaper had reported that the Olympic champion wanted to announce his cancellation for the last Grand Slam tournament of the tennis season on Monday because he was not yet feeling completely fit after his serious foot injury at the French Open. And so it came to pass.

The US Open in New York begins on 29 August. The 25-year-old is now planning his comeback at the intermediate round of the Davis Cup from 13 to 18 September in Hamburg.

Zverev twisted his ankle at the beginning of June in the semi-finals of the French Open against the eventual winner Rafael Nadal from Spain and tore all three lateral ligaments in his right ankle. The German number one was then operated on and underwent rehabilitation with physiotherapist Klaus Eder in Donaustauf. Although Zverev’s healing process went according to plan, the US Open still comes a little too soon for him.

“If it was a normal tournament ‘best of three’, then I could say, maybe I would already be ready. But ‘best of five’ as the first tournament back is difficult,” Zverev had said recently. However, Zverev is ready for the Davis Cup in his home country. The German team will play France (14 September), Belgium (16 September) and Australia (18 September) at the Rothenbaum Stadium.
