For a long time, it seemed that Mohamed Salah’s time at Anfield would come to an end this summer. But now the Egyptian has extended his contract with Liverpool.
Mohamed Salah has been playing for Liverpool since 2017 and will turn 33 this summer. This helps explain why negotiations between the Reds and the Egyptian over an extension to his contract, which expires after this season, have been protracted.
After all, it doesn’t really fit with the English record champions’ philosophy to provide a player who is almost 33 years old with a lucrative contract. And so both sides had recently sent signals that actually pointed to a split in the summer.
Salah in particular was disappointed by the LFC bosses’ policy – and he vented his frustration about this back in December, when he openly talked about leaving. In sporting terms, however, he proved his worth again this season and diligently collected arguments in favor of a contract extension.
He scored 27 goals by the 31st matchday, making him not only the top scorer for the Reds, but also leading the Premier League’s top scorers by a wide margin over ManCity’s Erling Haaland (21 goals). He also added three goals and four assists in the Champions League.
Salah also used these numbers to convince his bosses in the end – and they now provided the crowd favorite with a new contract after all. The club did not disclose the term. “I’ve had my best years here. I’ve played for eight years, hopefully it will be ten,” says Salah. “I want to tell the fans that I’m very, very happy here. I’ve signed here because I believe we can win many big titles together.”
This marks a continuation of an extremely successful partnership. Salah came to Anfield from AS Roma in 2017. Salah made his breakthrough in Europe with the Giallorossi after previously modest spells with FC Basel, Chelsea and ACF Fiorentina. His departure from the Eternal City was not entirely voluntary, although Roma’s hands were tied due to financial constraints that meant they had to meet UEFA requirements.
42 million euros, which increased to 50 million euros thanks to bonuses, saved Roma – and Salah took the decisive step in his career. Under then-Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp, the Egyptian took the next step and established himself among the ranks of the world’s absolute best strikers.
The second championship with Liverpool beckons
In 281 Premier League appearances since, he has scored 182 goals for the Reds. With a total of 184 goals (two for Chelsea), he currently ranks sixth in the all-time scoring charts. While he is probably too far behind the leader Alan Shearer with 260 goals, he can now set his sights on even the second-placed, Bayern striker Harry Kane (213), following his contract extension.
Salah also won titles with the Reds. In 2019, Liverpool were the best club team in the world, winning the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup. At the domestic level, they followed up by winning the league title a year later, then the FA Cup in 2022 and the League Cup in the same year and in 2024.
And with a current lead of eleven points over their closest rivals Arsenal, crowd favorite Salah – The Kop regularly starts the fan song ‘The Egyptian King’ – will probably celebrate his second league title with Liverpool in a few weeks. And as of today, it is certain that it might not be the last.
