“Not ticked off”: Halstenberg has his sights set on the World Cup – and a new contract

For three quarters of a year, Marcel Halstenberg was on the sidelines, but now the left-back has returned to RB Leipzig. With clear ideas for his future.

“It is a bit unusual”, Halstenberg said, when there is an international break but he can be found on the training pitch in Leipzig. After all, he has already made nine appearances for the DFB team, the last time being a substitute in the preliminary round match against Portugal (4:2) at the European Championship in June 2021. After a nine-month break with personal misfortunes, ankle problems and a knee operation, the DFB selection is currently not an issue for the 30-year-old.

But the World Cup in Qatar at the end of the year is. “Of course it’s a dream for every footballer to take part in a major tournament – I haven’t ticked that off yet either,” said Halstenberg.

Nor has he ticked off the subject of Leipzig. His contract with RB expires at the end of the season and his future has not yet been clarified. Halstenberg has defended for Leipzig since his move in the summer of 2015 from second-division club St. Pauli, and has played 127 Bundesliga, 16 Champions League, four Europa League and 16 DFB Pokal games for the club.

“First talks” with RB Leipzig

“I believe that a solution will then be found and I can have a future in Leipzig,”, That is now emerging. “There have already been initial talks with the club,” explained Halstenberg. In any case, the defender can “well imagine staying in Leipzig”.
