No visa: Boris Becker did not travel to the USA

Boris Becker is on duty as a tennis expert at the US Open. At the start of the tournament, however, not from New York

Boris Becker will not be on site in New York as a tennis expert for Sportdeutschland.TV at the US Open. Instead, the 55-year-old tennis legend will commentate on the opening of the Grand Slam tournament from a studio due to a missing visa, according to his lawyer.

“My client has applied for the necessary visa for the USA in due time and hopes that it will be granted promptly,” Becker’s lawyer Christian-Oliver Moser told the German Press Agency on Monday. “However, Boris Becker will commentate on the Thiem vs. Bublik match today at 5 p.m. German time from a studio together with Matthias Stach.” First the “Bild” had reported about it.

As the operator of Sportdeutschland.TV, DOSB New Media GmbH had surprisingly secured the media rights to the US Open from 2023 to 2027. When Becker was introduced as an expert three weeks ago in Munich, the 1989 US Open winner said that he would be there in person in New York and that his entry had been cleared.

The US Open, the last Grand Slam tournament of the year, begins on Monday in New York. One of the first matches is the duel between former US Open champion Dominic Thiem from Austria and Alexander Bublik from Kazakhstan at 5 pm German time.
