The EuroLeague clubs have rejected the proposal for a partnership with the NBA and FIBA. This does not appear to be deterring the two organisations: plans for a new European league are going ahead.

The NBA and FIBA have issued their first joint statement following the rejection. A partnership between all three parties could “unlock the enormous potential of basketball in Europe” and benefit clubs, players and, above all, the fans, the statement said.

Despite the rejection, the door remains open for the EuroLeague. Cooperation could help to unite European basketball under one umbrella and create a stronger and more sustainable system in the long term.

At the same time, the NBA and FIBA made it clear that they would stick to their own plans regardless of the EuroLeague’s decision. Together with partners who shared their vision of growth and new opportunities, they intended to establish a new professional men’s league.

“NBA Europe” is still set to launch for the 2027/28 season. The plan is for a 16-team league, with four places to be allocated via the Basketball Champions League and other qualification routes. Meanwhile, the EuroLeague is pursuing its own expansion plans and aims to expand to 24 teams.
