Jule Niemeier has started her first tennis tournament since reaching the quarter-finals of Wimbledon with a win.
The 22-year-old defeated Ylena In-Albon of Switzerland 7-5, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3 in 2:40 hours at the WTA clay-court tournament in Lausanne to reach the last 16. There, the player from Dortmund will meet a qualifier or the Russian Varvara Gracheva.
Wimbledon semi-finalist Tatjana Maria, who defeated Niemeier in the quarter-finals of the grass-court classic in London, will also be playing in Lausanne. She will start the tournament against a qualifier.
