Coco Gauff is the next big name to be knocked out of the Grand Slam tournament in London. The world number two is having a bitter day.
It’s barely three weeks since Coco Gauff celebrated her victory at the French Open – but at the next Grand Slam tournament in Wimbledon, the American has had a rude awakening. In the first round of the traditional tournament in London, the world number two was surprisingly defeated by Ukraine’s Dajana Jastremska (ranked 46th) 6-7 (3-7), 1-6. The 21-year-old’s dream of a first Wimbledon title has thus come to an early end.
Gauff’s defeat was one of several surprises at the traditional Grand Slam tournament in London. In addition to Gauff, Jessica Pegula from the US, China’s Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen and Paula Badosa from Spain also had to throw in the towel in the opening round.
There were also some big names among the men: Alexander Zverev was knocked out in the first round (read more here), as were Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti, Russia’s Daniil Medvedev, and Denmark’s Holger Rune.
