Terry Rozier of the Miami Heat has come under FBI scrutiny. The Miami Heat guard is accused of being involved in illegal sports betting.
According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, the FBI is investigating a gambling ring and came across the NBA guard in the process. The same investigation uncovered the violations of Jontay Porter, who was suspended for life by the NBA last year for illegal betting.
The case involved two games in which large sums were bet on Porter’s “under.” This means that the player stays under a certain point value. The line is always set in advance by the betting shops. Similar things are said to have happened to Rozier when he was still with the Charlotte Hornets.
It is said to be a game on March 23, 2023 between Charlotte and New Orleans, when Rozier only played nine minutes and then did not return with a foot injury. The guard, who averaged 21 points this season, also missed the following eight games as a result.
Rozier, in contrast to Porter, an established player
When some high amounts were bet on various Rozier lines, some betting providers took these bets off the site. “We have not been able to find any violations of NBA rules regarding injuries,” said NBA spokesman Mike Bass in a statement. “However, we are aware of the investigation by the authorities and are cooperating with them.”
The difference with Porter is that Rozier doesn’t have to fight for his place in the NBA, but has already raked in over $130 million in his career. The 30-year-old played for the Hornets between 2019 and 2024 before being traded to the Miami Heat. The combo guard is currently in the third year of his four-year, $96 million contract. When asked about the allegations, Rozier declined to comment.
There have also been recent investigations in college basketball, which mainly focused on the player Hysier Miller (then of Temple), who signed with the German BBL club MBC a few weeks ago.
